La Tour Ibirapuera

History

La Tour is by R. Yazbeki, a construction and development firm that has concentrated thirty years of work along the Ibirapuerai–Moemai–Vila Nova Conceição axis, and it was born with a summary phrase in the house’s own materials: a tribute to Ibirapuera’s most sophisticated quadrilateral. The architectural project is by Itamar Berezini, the interior design by Maria Angela Lopesi and the landscaping by Gilberto Elkisi. On a 2,355 m² plot on Rua Tumiarui, a few blocks from the park, the developer raised a twenty-four-storey tower with a single family per floor — the same short street where, fifteen years later, it would go on to build Tumiaru 120 Ibirapuerai.

• Concept: one apartment per floor, four living rooms and four en suites wrapped in windows — exclusivity resolved in the floor plan, not in the marketing copy.
• Trivia: the garage has an invention with a name of its own. Besides the individual storage unit and the five parking spaces, the project delivered the hobby box — an enclosed, walled parking space for the car residents do not want left exposed next to the others. In 2008 this did not exist in any residential building in São Paulo; today it has become a standard feature in new developments.

Architecture and aesthetics

A single tower, twenty-four storeys, one apartment per floor. Itamar Berezini‘s choice was to treat each slab as a suspended house: four living rooms in a row, four en suites and the entire perimeter resolved in glazing, so that light enters from all four sides and no principal room is left against a blind wall. There is no neighbour on the landing — the lift opens directly into the family’s own hall. The interior design of the common areas is by Maria Angela Lopesi and the landscaping by Gilberto Elkisi.

Ibirapuera: the address

Rua Tumiarui is a short, flat, tree-lined street in the quadrilateral São Paulo calls Ibirapuerai — the patch of city squeezed between the parki, Moemai and Vila Marianai, which the postal service still registers as Vila Mariana and the market never called that. It is an address of double advantage: on foot, the park, the street fairs and the neighbourhood shops the area has kept; by car, Avenida Paulistai, the Estação Paraísoi underground station and the hospital district within minutes. The quadrilateral is small, almost entirely built up, and the odd plot that comes up for development tends to be the last one on the block.
