Maison Sophie

History

Built in 2003 by Zaboi, Maison Sophie belongs to the collection that lends its name to a good part of the builder’s stock in the Jardinsi: a sequence of buildings named after women — Maison Mariei, Maison Josephinei, Maison Madeleinei, Maison Gisellei, Maison Helenai — erected on neighbouring streets over three decades. Zabo concentrated practically all of its work in this part of the city, and Sophie is one of the oldest addresses in the lineage still in circulation on the ultra-high-end market.

• Concept: one apartment per floor, a private hall and large floor areas on a narrow Jardins plot — privacy resolved by the floor plan, not by a wall.
• Curiosities: the building’s pool is not outdoors. It is indoor and heated, with a semi-Olympic lane — an unusual solution for a residential building from the early 2000s, and one that removes the season of the year from the equation. The building was also born with its own generator, a rare item in the 2003 crop.

Architecture and aesthetics

A single tower, sixteen floors, one apartment per floor. Privacy here is not a façade ornament: it is a consequence of the layout. With a single unit per floor, the lift opens directly into each family’s private hall, and the floor plan can occupy the entire slab, with no ventilation shaft and no shared wall. The sources describing the building classify it as contemporary and sober; the signature of the architectural project is not publicly documented and, for that reason, is not attributed here.

Jardim Paulista: the address

Jardim Paulistai is the neighbourhood where São Paulo learned to live well and never unlearned it. Rua Peixoto Gomide cuts through the residential core between Alameda Lorenai and Rua Oscar Freirei, a few minutes’ walk from the shop windows, tables and galleries that made the name of the Jardinsi — and a few minutes’ drive from Avenida Paulistai and Club Athletico Paulistanoi. It is an address that does not depend on novelty: the street grid, street-level shops and tree cover have been established for decades, and recent verticalisation has found little land to grow into.
