Bernardes Arquitetura

The third generation of a dynasty in Brazilian architecture: Thiago Bernardes' firm, which translates the modern Rio repertoire into residential buildings with few units and flexible floor plans.

Who it is

Bernardes Arquitetura was created in 2012 by Thiago Bernardes and is, in the firm’s own words, “the result of a history that spans generations” — the lineage that comes from Sergio Bernardes, one of the central names in Brazilian modern architecture, and passes through Claudio Bernardes. In establishing himself independently, Thiago Bernardes opened a phase of signature work and new partnerships; today the partnership includes Nuno Costa Nunes, Márcia Santoro, Camila Tariki, Dante Furlan, Francisco Abreu, Rafael de Oliveira, Thiago Moretti and Antonia Bernardes. The firm moves between the house, the high-end residential building, the hotel and the cultural project, in Brazil and abroad.

Language

  • Style: the Brazilian modern legacy read in a contemporary key — clean volumes, exposed structure when it helps, and the design resolved through proportion and the relationship with its surroundings, not through ornament.
  • Materials and signature: concrete, wood and glass in sober compositions; strong integration between interior, terrace and landscaping; floor plans with reconfiguration options, where the buyer chooses between more suites or more social space.
  • Awards: a firm of international standing, with works published in specialised Brazilian and foreign press.
