Pelicano

In Cerqueira César, two blocks from Club Athletico Paulistano, a modernist tower that pulls back from the pavement to fit a garden in front. Inside, 180 m² of open-plan living room and full-width windows from end to end — the floor plan the Jardins stopped building.

Rua Haddock Lobo, 1663 · Cerqueira César, São Paulo/SP · CEP 01414-003

  • 178–180 m²
  • 1 parking space

History

The Pelicano belongs to the generation of buildings that built up Rua Haddock Lobo between the 1960s and 1980s, when the block traded houses for towers and named almost all of them after birds, rivers and trees: on the same stretch stand the Itacuruça, the Manacá, the Tijuca, the Ibirama and the Taiarana. The condominium was constituted before the Receita Federal in February 1985, and that is the earliest date that can be documented about the building; the market that sells it today describes it as a 1970s building, and the layout agrees — 180 m² with three bedrooms and one parking space belongs to another era, when the car did not yet dictate the floor plan. Neither the design’s authorship nor the builder is publicly documented and, for that reason, is not attributed here.

  • Concept: large floor area, open plan and a generous setback — the building gives up land for the garden instead of hugging the building line, a rare gesture on a 1,365 m² plot on Haddock Lobo.
  • Curiosities: the tower is 67.2 m tall, measured by the municipality’s aerial photogrammetric survey, and it already appeared built in the 2007 flyover — it is an established building, not a recent one. The name follows the block’s toponymy, which speaks Tupi and ornithology: Pelicano next to Itacuruça, Manacá and Ibirama.

Architecture and aesthetics

A single tower of modernist lines, resting on a low base that occupies almost the entire rear of the plot and frees up the front for the garden. The façade is resolved with full-length windows, and it is from them that the feature visitors mention most comes: cross-ventilation and constant natural light throughout the living room. Inside, the floor plan follows the open-plan school — a single room capable of holding several settings, an American-style kitchen integrated with the pantry, a full staff suite and an independent laundry area. The architectural authorship is not publicly documented and, for that reason, is not attributed here.

Cerqueira César: the address

Cerqueira César is the half of the Jardins that works. Between Avenida Paulista and Rua Oscar Freire, it is a neighbourhood of clinics, galleries, shopfronts and restaurants that open early, with a residential grid hidden just behind the commercial corners — and it is exactly in that fold that Rua Haddock Lobo runs. From this stretch you can walk to Club Athletico Paulistano, Colégio Mater Dei, Colégio Dante Alighieri and Jardim Pamplona Shopping; Estação Oscar Freire handles the metro without a car. It is an address that has been established for half a century: the tree cover, the street-level shops and the block layout do not change, and what changes is only the price per square metre.
