Chácara Santo Antônio
The neighbourhood that the corporate southern zone surrounded without managing to swallow: consulate, chambers of commerce and multinational towers on one side; short streets and houses on wide plots on the other.
The neighbourhood’s story
Chácara Santo Antônio was born from the subdivision of the country estates and farms that occupied the region — some of them on the former Fazenda das Águas Espraiadas — and takes the name a Portuguese landowner gave it in homage to the patron saint of Portugal. Until the 1960s it was a neighbourhood of muddy streets in the rain and dusty ones in winter. What turned it inside out was German immigration, coming above all from Colônia and Parelheiros, and the European industries that followed in its wake: Bayer, BASF, Philips, Pfizer. When industry left São Paulo, the ground stayed — and became office space. Today the neighbourhood is home to the Brazil-Germany Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the United States Consulate-General and Amcham, has the Rochaverá and the Parque da Cidade complex within its boundaries, and it is there that the Alto das Nações raises a 219-metre tower, advertised as the tallest in the country’s corporate segment. Between the Avenida Santo Amaro axis and the Chucri Zaidan–Berrini axis, a residential core of houses on large plots has survived, which residents defend block by block.
The residential core is an island under restrictive zoning surrounded by two corporate axes; when a large plot escapes the tower and becomes a house or a very-low-density condominium, there is no possible replacement in the block next door.
Chácara Santo Antônio: working within walking distance of the city’s largest stock of office floor space and coming home to a street of houses. The neighbourhood that stayed in the middle and did not give way.
The surrounding area
- Clubs: Hípica de Santo Amaro, right up against the neighbourhood with its preserved wooded areas, and the São Paulo Golf Club, a few minutes away in Santo Amaro.
- Schools: Pueri Domus, Colégio Suíço-Brasileiro and Maple Bear within the neighbourhood; Chapel School and the Chácara Flora campus of The British College of Brazil nearby. In higher education, Anhembi Morumbi, São Judas Tadeu and UNIP.
- Dining and lifestyle: the Parque da Cidade complex, with a shopping centre, hotel and a park open to the public; Market Place and the Morumbi shopping centre; and the executive hotel offer serving the corporate axis.
- Parks: Parque Severo Gomes, almost 35,000 m² of remnant woodland on what is left of the former Vila Elvira and Granja Julieta — it was called Parque Granja Julieta until 1992 — plus the open park within the Parque da Cidade complex itself.
