Bela Vista
Bixiga by nickname, Bela Vista by baptism: the district that holds the slope between the old city centre and Avenida Paulista, with the country's largest theatre circuit and a belt of hospitals along the ridge.
The neighbourhood’s story
The official name dates from 1910; the nickname is older and stuck harder. Bexiga was what they called Antônio José Leite Braga, the landowner until 1870, whose face was marked by smallpox — the disease people called “bexiga” — and his fields gave the neighbourhood its name; the Italian tongue swapped the “e” for an “i”, and it became Bixiga. The district is home to that Bixiga, the Morro dos Ingleses, and a slice of Cerqueira César, and it brings together things almost no other São Paulo neighbourhood shares under the same postcode: the Festa de Nossa Senhora Achiropita on every weekend of August; the Vai-Vai samba school, born in 1930 on the site of the former Saracura quilombo, whose archaeological site surfaced during the excavation of Line 6-Laranja; MASP and the Teatro Oficina, both by Lina Bo Bardi; the Vila Itororó, built in 1922 by the Portuguese Francisco de Castro, with the city’s first swimming pool; and the schools of the Fundação Getulio Vargas. Up on the hill sits the opposite of all this: the Morro dos Ingleses, a tight grid of slopes with streets named after European nationalities — of the English, the French, the Germans, the Dutch, the Belgians — early-twentieth-century townhouses, and the district’s only stretch classified at the top of CRECI’s value table.
At the top of Morro dos Ingleses, verticalisation stopped before it arrived; the full-floor, very-low-density buildings ten minutes’ walk from Paulista are from a vintage that axis zoning no longer replaces — the same plot, today, would hold many times the number of units.

The surrounding area
- Clubs: a club here is the exception — this district is about theatre. The circuit of the Oficina, the Ruth Escobar, the Sérgio Cardoso, the Bibi Ferreira and the Macunaíma makes Bela Vista one of Brazil’s main theatre hubs, and the gyms and wellness facilities of Paulista are a short walk away.
- Schools: the three Fundação Getulio Vargas schools — Administration, Economics and Law — within the neighbourhood, and Colégio Dante Alighieri and the traditional schools of the Paulista axis a few minutes away.
- Dining and lifestyle: the historic cantinas of the Bixiga; MASP, the Japan House, Cidade Matarazzo, Shopping Pátio Paulista and Shopping Cidade São Paulo; and the belt of hospitals along the ridge — Beneficência Portuguesa, Alemão Oswaldo Cruz, Santa Catarina, Paulistano and Samaritano Paulista — one of the country’s largest healthcare hubs.
