SPOL Architects

An architecture and urban design office with offices in São Paulo and Oslo, the author of towers that twist on their own axis — the line that became known as the Dancing Towers.

Who they are

SPOL Architects is an international architecture and urban design office with two headquarters, São Paulo and Oslo, led by partners Adam Kurdahl, Jens Noach and Raissa Bahia. It works from strategy to design, on multidisciplinary projects of every scale — urbanism, culture, offices, retail, hospitality, housing, requalification and interiors. The creative process is organised as an open studio, in which the client is invited to take part in the conception. The dual headquarters is declared by the office to be a method, not a matter of logistics: the dialogue between two very different design cultures is what produces the solutions the office itself calls unexpected.

Language

  • Style: geometry in motion — the Dancing Towers line, in which the slab twists subtly from floor to floor and the volume seems to turn as it rises, changing the orientation of each terrace.
  • Materials and signature: column-free terraces integrated into the social area, floor plans conceived as “houses in the sky”, and strong control over the relationship between volume, light and view; the office often also signs the interiors of the common areas.
  • Awards: a portfolio with public and cultural works in Norway — among them the Tangen Centre and the Oslo fire station — alongside its Brazilian residential production.

Landmark works

  • Isa Brooklin — Rua Michigan, 575, Brooklin, São Paulo (architecture and interiors, for Nortis).
  • SOLO — Jardins, São Paulo (architecture and interiors, for Nortis).
  • Tangen Centre and Oslo Fire Station — Norway.
