Sérgio Sclovsky
The architect who designed, at the end of the 1970s, the plan that took the seafront avenue out of the Brazilian seaside resort.
Who they are
Sérgio Sclovsky is the architect behind the first Masterplan for Jurerê Internacional, presented at the end of the 1970s to Grupo Habitasul and the city of Florianópolis. The plan anticipated integrated planning models that would only become mainstream decades later, and it set the decisions that still distinguish the neighbourhood today: the setback between the beach and the first residential blocks, in place of the traditional seafront avenue, and the concept of houses without walls.
Language
- Style: seaside-resort urbanism with its own road hierarchy, density planned by zone and pedestrian priority along the seafront strip.
- Materials and hallmark: the Passeio dos Namorados, paved in Portuguese cobblestone, as the neighbourhood’s public backbone — the seafront given back to those on foot, not to the car.
