Tamboré SA
The company that turned a farm into a neighbourhood: created in the 1960s to subdivide the land of the Fazenda Tamboré, it is the author of the residential developments that gave their name to the entire region neighbouring Alphaville.
Who they are
Tamboré S/A is the urban development company founded in the 1960s with a single purpose: to plan the occupation of the plots of the former Fazenda Tamboré, rural property of the Álvares Penteado and Ulhôa Rodrigues families, today divided between the municipalities of Barueri and Santana de Parnaíba. It is an unusual case in the Brazilian market — a company that was not born to build buildings, but to design an entire territory, and whose name ended up becoming the name of the neighbourhood.
The movement runs parallel to, not subordinate to, that of Alphaville district: the two developments occupy pieces of the same former farm, began in the same historical window and grew side by side, but are distinct operations, by distinct companies. When Alphaville’s success created demand for very high-end residential property that the region could not meet, Tamboré S/A responded with scale — opening the first of its gated developments at the end of the 1980s. It worked well enough for the formula to be repeated twice, and for the neighbourhood to gain its own shopping centre soon after. From the 2000s, Tamboré district began the process of going vertical that gave it its current look.
Product vision
- Positioning: a gated development on a grand scale — the company’s product is not the house, it is walled land with complete infrastructure delivered before the first building work: asphalt, kerbs and gutters, drainage, water, sewage, piped gas, street lighting and road landscaping. The architecture is left to each owner, which turned the residential developments into an open-air showcase of São Paulo’s high-end practices, batch by batch.
- Distinguishing features: scale and greenery treated as infrastructure, not as leftover space. The first residential development has 1.86 million m² with 18 km of internal roads, its own lake and around 26,000 m² of preserved native forest; the second sets aside more than a third of the plot — 245,633 of the 686,103 m² — as green area that cannot be built on. The perimeter is closed by a continuous wall, with separate resident and service gatehouses.
Works
- Tamboré 1, in Barueri — the first and largest of the residential developments: 702 plots of 1,000 to 5,000 m² spread across four sectors, over 1.86 million m². Opened in 1987.
- Tamboré 2, in Santana de Parnaíba — 321 plots on 686,103 m², with 245,633 m² of preserved green area and a single access point via Praça da China.
- Tamboré 3 completed the trio begun by the first two; the Shopping Tamboré came next, to serve the population of the residential developments and of the neighbouring towns.
